Teaching Assistants Career Video

Insider Info

Teacher aides are also called paraprofessionals, teacher assistants or para-educators. They help with lessons, outings and other activities, and assist special-needs students with mobility, communication and personal hygiene.

Aides assist and supervise students in the classroom, cafeteria, on the playground or on field trips. They record grades, set up equipment or help prepare materials for instruction. They also tutor and assist children in learning class material using the teacher's lesson plan.

"Only apply if you feel you have the patience to work with all types of children," says Linda Kessling. She was a teacher aide for seven years before completing college and becoming a full-time teacher.

"Some of these children may have less abilities than most children and will rely on you. Volunteer first before you make a commitment to be a teacher aide."
