Chemical Technicians Career Video

Insider Info

Chemical technicians help set up and conduct chemical experiments. They operate lab equipment and prepare solutions. They also help develop and conduct quality assurance tests.

Technicians work with chemists and chemical engineers to develop products. They are involved with research, testing and lab work.

Some technicians might take samples of air and water to test pollution levels. Others work in research, producing compounds through organic synthesis.

"A person with a disability could definitely work as a chemical technician," says Adam Foote. He is a chemical technician in Phoenix.

Chemical technicians have to know more than just chemistry. They also need an understanding of microbiology and industrial processes, according to information from a chemical engineering technician program.

Chemical technicians must observe safety practices to protect themselves from explosions, burns and illnesses caused by exposure to corrosive or toxic gases or other substances.

"I am an active member of our health and safety committee," says Hindera Sinha. Sinha is a lab technician. "We want to ensure that all employees are using safe lab practices."
