The main duties and responsibilities of the casino dealer are to operate
gambling tables and games such as roulette, blackjack, keno and baccarat.
They make sure that the rules of the games are followed. They also determine
the winners, calculate and pay out winnings and collect losing bets.
One of the best ways to break into the gaming industry is by becoming a
casino dealer. The gaming area is the largest department within a casino and
dealers are the most numerous workers in that department.
There's a good possibility for advancement. Eventually dealers may supervise
staff, train new dealers and monitor tables. Related positions include: gambling
tables supervisor, blackjack dealer, baccarat dealer and keno dealer. You
might also hear the term croupier. A croupier is a person in charge of a gambling
table.
Above all of these people is the pit manager, who supervises casino dealers,
makes sure their skills are up to date and ensure employees and guests follow
all casino rules.
A potential casino dealer needs to be good with money, counting, making
change and maintaining good customer relations. They should also be familiar
with card totaling, chip handling, cutting, shuffling, accuracy and game speed
and fundamentals.
New dealers usually work in new casinos -- conditions are usually clean
and safe. Still, the job requires stamina. Dealers are on their feet throughout
their shifts and have to stay mentally alert at all times. Dealers may also
have to work long, irregular hours.
