Real-Life Math

You are working as a dental assistant in a big dental practice. When you are working chair-side, you sometimes use simple mathematics to figure out various things. If you are taking an x-ray, you use geometry to figure out the angles and the correct placement, for example. You have to count supplies and keep track of how many products are used.

Today, the dentist is working on a patient. She is going to take an impression so she can fit a patient with a partial denture. She asks you to mix some water with alginate. Alginate is a material used for making impressions.

According to the instructions that came with the alginate, the water must be between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Your thermometer is in degrees Fahrenheit.

You run some tap water. It feels right to your hand but you must be sure. You insert a thermometer in the water. The thermometer reads 70 degrees Fahrenheit. You must convert this to Celsius.

What is the reading?
