Real-Life Math -- Solution

Here's how to figure it out:

Step 1

Convert Coughlin's and Wagstaff's times to seconds:

Coughlin: 1:53:45

60 seconds (1 minute) + 53 seconds + 0 (45 is a fraction of a second, round off to 0)
Total: 113 seconds

Wagstaff: 1:56:14

60 seconds (1 minute) + 56 seconds + 0 (14 is a fraction of a second, round off to 0)
Total: 116 seconds

Step 2

Find how many seconds difference between both times:

116 sec - 113 sec = 3 sec

Step 3

Find the percentage:

3 / 116 x 100 = 2.58, or 3 percent

Coughlin's record-breaking time is 3 percent faster than Wagstaff's.
