Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You take no action.

You tell yourself that you are here to learn from the culture, not to try and change it. The little boy gets sicker and sicker. Eventually the father relents and hires a boat to take him to the hospital. It turns out the little boy has a brain disease.

The story does not have a happy ending. Eventually, the boy dies. You go to the hospital and speak with the doctor. He tells you that the disease was incurable, and that even with quicker treatment the boy probably would have died. All that they could have done was ease his pain. Although the experience was upsetting, you feel that you did the right thing.

John Barker says a situation like this isn't easy. "It was a hard decision," he says. "Coming from a privileged country, sometimes it was hard to figure out my role."
