Real-Life Decision Making

Medical records technicians see personal information on a daily basis. For that reason, they are usually very careful about what they say about their work. They are also very meticulous in the details of their work.

You are a detail-oriented person. A position as a medical records technician appealed to you.

You enjoy organizing and recording details. And to some extent, that ability has helped you move through the ranks of the medical records department. Currently, you're being considered for the position of department director.

You've been working hard to do your job to the best of your ability. You are ordinarily a very organized person, so that's not usually a problem for you. However, the past couple of days have found you not feeling well. You're tired and sluggish, and this morning you began to feel a little weak. Food doesn't interest you, and it takes all your energy to drag yourself into work.

But you feel the need to be there. You are being considered for a promotion, so you don't want to miss work. You feel like it would reflect badly on your work habits.

As the day pushes on, you feel worse and worse. Half your time is spent thinking about how you feel. You even find yourself making mistakes in the charts. So far, you've found two details that you've missed and had to go back and add in. After a while, even your supervisor notices that you're not yourself. When she learns that you aren't feeling well, she suggests that you go home.

What do you do?
