Real-Life Math -- Solution

You must figure out how much skin to remove for a graft. First, figure out the total square area affected:

6 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 9 = 25 square inches

Now figure out how much extra skin to take:

9 percent of 25 = 25 x .09 = 2.25 square inches

Add to get the total:

25 + 2.25 = 27.25 or 27.3 square inches

So you'll need to remove 27.3 square inches of skin from the hip to cover the area to be grafted.
