Real-Life Decision Making

You have been commissioned to design a tapestry for one wall of a new symphony hall. It is a wonderful project, and you are thrilled to be working on it.

In the tapestry, you want to weave giant leafy elm trees to symbolize the city, and also want to put in stylized brass instruments: the trumpet, the tuba, the trombone and the bugle. It will be a silk and cashmere tapestry, rich in color and texture.

You allow your ideas to flow, and sketch out a rough pattern. But you don't want to map out the entire tapestry in detail because you want to have freedom as you weave.

However, you must follow a strict budget for the cost of the materials. "The cost can start to skyrocket if you choose silks, cashmeres or even gold thread," says Frances Schultz, a weaver.

What do you do?
