Your specialty is the Great Depression of the '30s. Basketville, the town you work in, prides itself in not having been as severely affected by the Depression as the rest of the country.

While unemployment rates were as high as 25 percent across the country in 1932, the highest rate Basketville ever faced was around 13 percent -- or so say some local politicians. Other people say Basketville suffered as much as other towns during the Depression.

You decide to write a book about the era and settle the dispute once and for all. You have population figures and unemployment statistics to work with. Figure out what the unemployment rate was for each year and what the percentage increase was between the lowest year and the highest year.

For example, if the lowest year had 10 percent unemployment, and the highest year was 25 percent, then you would divide 25 by 10 to get 2.5. Multiply that by 100 to get the percentage and you get 250 percent. So, the unemployment rate increased by 250 percent when it went from 10 percent to 25 percent. It's confusing, but the unemployment rate is a percentage of the total population, while the percentage increase in the rate shows how much bigger the highest rate is compared to the lowest rate.
