Real-Life Math -- Solution

First you will need to figure out how many square feet are in a 40- by 120-foot lot. The formula for area is width times length.

Area = width x length
Area = 40 x 120
Area = 4,800 square feet

The lots are 4,800 square feet each.

Now, we need to restate 40 acres in square feet.

Given that there are 43,560 square feet in an acre, the formula is:

43,560 x 40 = 1,742,400

There are 1,742,400 square feet in 40 acres. So how many lots will fit?

1,742,400 / 4,800 = 363

You will be able to build 363 brownstones within your new development.
