Real-Life Math

Math is an important part of a pharmacy technician's job. Measured amounts of medicine must be exact, or they could be dangerous to a patient. "A mistake on the job for me means putting someone's life in jeopardy," says technician Ruth Tucker.

Technicians must be able to use addition and subtraction skills exactly in order to protect their patients.

You are a pharmacy technician working in the IV room of a hospital. It's your job to prepare the medication that doctors prescribe to their patients. There is no margin for error when you measure and prepare these intravenous drugs, because they go directly into the patient's bloodstream. In other words, accurate math skills could mean the difference between life and death.

The doctor hands you a prescription for 2 grams of a medication to be given by IV at 120 milliliters per hour. The drip chamber rate is 20 drops per milliliter. How many drops per minute is the IV chamber to be set at?
