Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution
You cancel the trip because of the poor conditions.
The seniors are disappointed. You explain that their safety is your top
concern. You promise to plan another big excursion as soon as possible.
This is the real-life decision made by recreation therapist Randy Bourassa.
"The one thing that we do that could put most people at risk is using the
buses," he says. "You just check the road conditions. If they seem unsafe,
then you just cancel the outing or change it."
Recreation therapists' top priority is the safety of the participants.
They also ensure activities are fun and healthy. So if safety is an issue,
the best policy is to cancel or postpone the activity.
"The impact is great on the residents, but it's not a life-or-death
kind of thing," Bourassa says.
"Sometimes, though, when we cancel bingo, they think it's
death -- but it's not," he adds, laughing.
