Real-Life Math

Insulation workers say math is a constant presence in their work. And since they're usually up on a ladder or working in a tight area with their hands full of insulation and tape, they have to be able to do the math quickly and without the help of a calculator.

Most of the math is estimation -- figuring out how much insulation to cut and how much foam insulation will be needed.

Try these 3 problems:

  1. You're working on a steam pipe insulation job in the basement of an apartment building. You start by taking out your tape measure and getting the lengths of pipe (in inches):

    61, 39, 134, 249, 386, 30, 310, 290

How much pipe covering will you need? If the covering comes in 5.5-yard rolls, how many rolls should you remove from the truck?

  2. You are estimating the cost of the job described in question 1. If standard charges are $20 per yard plus $40 of labor per hour and the job will take 3.5 hours, how much will you charge?

  3. You are asked to blow foam insulation into a wall at an office complex. You know the wall opening is 520 cubic yards in size. You want to fill the space 65 percent full of insulation.

If it takes 1.3 pounds of insulation to fill 10 cubic yards, how many pounds of insulation will you need to load into the machine?
