Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You use a tool to knock it to the ground and kick it out of the way.

Maybe this will work out OK. Maybe the piece of asbestos you found is the only one in the building.

But what if there is other asbestos and other workers also ignore the problem, only to have an inspector uncover it a few months later? Your company could face stiff fines and other penalties for not reporting the problem. Worse yet, people could get very sick.

Ron Hobbs, business manager at Local 28 of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers, says workers learn how to make the necessary decisions. He says, "Decisions are based on a lot of their apprenticeship training -- as far as working safe and [using] the proper insulation materials. So, a lot of the decision making is covered in the apprenticeship program."
