Real-Life Math -- Solution

  1. How much pipe covering will you need? If the covering comes in 5.5-yard rolls, how many rolls should you remove from the truck?

    Length = 61 + 39 + 134 + 249 + 386 + 30 + 310 + 290
    Length = 1,499 inches

    1,499 inches / 36 inches per yard = 41.6 yards

    Rolls = 41.6 yards / 5.5 yards per roll
    Rolls = 7.6

    You'll need 8 rolls of insulation.

  2. How much will you charge?

    Materials = 41.6 yards x $20 per yard
    Materials = $832

    Labor = 3.5 hours x $40 per hour
    Labor = $140

    Total cost = $832 + $140
    Total cost = $972

    You should charge $972 for the job.

  3. How many pounds of insulation will you need to load into the machine?

    To fill = 520 cubic yards x 0.65 full
    To fill = 338 cubic yards

    Pounds = (338 cubic yards / 10 cubic yards) x 1.3 pounds per 10 cubic yards
    Pounds = 33.8 cubic yards x 1.3 pounds
    Pounds = 44

    You'll need 44 pounds of insulation.

Ron Hobbs, business manager at Local 28 of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers, says any necessary math is taught during the apprenticeship programs. "A math background is helpful but not required. A lot of work we do involves sheet- metal layout and it doesn't hurt to have some kind of background in geometry. But we have a four-year apprenticeship program, and we can teach it through the apprenticeship also," he says.
