Real-Life Decision Making

You haven't yet graduated from a speech pathologist assistant program at college when you're suddenly offered a job! Suddenly you've got decisions to make.

"Before I even graduated from [a] communicative disorders assistant program, I was once offered a job for a school board in a small rural city as a CDA [communicative disorders assistant]," says Sara Bingham.

"I met with the principal of the school I was to work at. It was a school for children with autism, and I would have had my own office and a therapy room. During a school tour, I saw that a lot of the children were using augmentative communication binders and books. I was very excited -- what an opportunity to learn it was going to be!"

But when Bingham looked at this offer a little more closely, she noticed a very important detail was missing.

"My dilemma arose when I learned that the school board did not have a speech-language pathologist on staff that would supervise any intervention that I was involved in," says Bingham.

You are in Bingham's situation. You're still in college, so landing a job now would sure be nice. But the offer is asking you to be more than what you are training for.
