Real-Life Communication

Many purchasers and buyers spend at least several days a month on the road. Buyers and purchasers for worldwide manufacturing companies often travel internationally and attend several trade shows a year.

Imagine you're a senior purchasing agent for a large telecommunications company. Your company buys many of its electronic components and parts from smaller manufacturers. You routinely attend trade shows to see what's new and hot. This year, you're unable to attend the next trade show because of an inventory crisis. You decide to send a junior purchasing agent in your place.

The purchaser seems a little overwhelmed at the prospect, but agrees to attend. You'll need to write her a memo -- both to boost her confidence and offer her some advice about what to keep in mind while she's at the trade fair. Your memo should be between 150 and 250 words.

Don't get bogged down with too much information. In your memo, you'll want to identify the reasons for sending the junior buyer to the trade show. You'll want to focus on purchasing tips for someone not authorized to make purchases, but able to gather valuable information for your company. You may want to request that she prepare a written summary for you when she returns.
