Real-Life Math -- Solution

If you think that your order would put you over budget, you're right.

Round the cost of each place setting up or down to the nearest 10 and then multiply that by the number of place settings:

$31 = $30
50 x $30 = $1,500

$39 = $40
100 x $40 = $4,000

4,000 + 1,500 = $5,500

If you ordered 50 settings of the antique rose and 100 settings of the morning lilac, you would be $500 over budget.

$40 x 12 = $480
$40 x 13 = $520

You need to drop 13 morning lilac place settings off your order.

Of course, after you've completed your order you'll have to write out your purchase order and calculate exactly how much the wholesaler should be charging you. Keeping a running total in your head doesn't replace crunching numbers, but it can simplify the buying process and keep you from making a costly -- and embarrassing -- mistake.
