Real-Life Math -- Solution

1. What is the area of the roof? How many bundles of shingles will you need?

44 feet long x 15 feet wide x 2 sides = 1,320
The area of the roof is 1,320 square feet.

1,320 square feet / 33 square feet per bundle = 40 bundles
You'll need 40 bundles of shingles.

2. What is the length of the roof's perimeter? How many bundles of starter will you need?

Perimeter = (44 feet long x 2 sides) + (15 feet wide x 4 sides)
Perimeter = 88 + 60
Perimeter = 148
The length of the roof's perimeter is 148 feet.

148 feet / 69 feet per bundle of starter = 2.14
You'll need 3 bundles of starter (there'll be some left over).

3. What is the length of the roof peak? How many bundles of capping will you need?
The roof peak is 44 feet long.
44 feet / 28 feet per bundle of capping = 1.57
You'll need 2 bundles of capping. Again, you'll have some left over.

Before any job, roofers need to write an estimate of what it will cost. This job is done by the roofing company's more experienced employees.

"If you're going to do the estimating, [math skills] are quite important," says roofer Garry O'Farrell. "For the ordinary employee, just shingling and that, it's not of great importance."

Beginner roofers need math skills for measuring. Once they gain experience, they also do calculations for estimates.
