Dear Alex,

I am glad that you are interested in Shakespeare's Globe Theater. The theater that we will visit is not the original, but the reproduction is as faithful as possible to the original. The Globe has an interesting history.

The original Globe was built around 1598 in London's Bankside district. It was an open-air octagonal amphitheater that could seat up to 3,000 spectators. It burned down in 1613. Construction started on a new theater, and it was completed before Shakespeare's death.

The new Globe operated until 1642, when the Puritans closed all theaters. The Globe was demolished in 1644 and tenements were built in its place.

In 1993, the late Sam Wanamaker, an American actor and director, founded a new Globe Theater near the site of the original. The construction on the latest Globe Theater was completed in 1996. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the theater in May of 1997. The production was Henry V.
