Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to confront him.

This is the real-life decision made by Scott Martin.

"You have to speak up," said Martin.

This kind of decision is a big part of the job. The challenge comes in explaining your projections in language that everyone can understand.

Martin looked at his figures again and looked for other ways to explain this situation to the president. Once he was able to explain why he had arrived at his conclusions, the president was much more open-minded about the rate increase.

"If you can't tell the president what you did and why you did it, there's no point," said Martin. "Communication is very important. You have to trust your actuarial mind, trust your judgments."
