Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You have painkillers prescribed.

You can't bear to have such a young pony put to sleep. The painkillers dull the pain, but, as suspected, cause stomach ulcers.

The pony now has problems due to the stomach ulcers. Also, he costs as much to maintain as your other animals, but isn't bringing in revenue.

Your choice -- though a compassionate one -- has not really helped the pony in the long run. And it certainly hasn't helped you financially!

You probably should have had him put to sleep. It would have prevented his suffering, and would have saved you money.

"The old [saying] is true, it costs as much to keep a bad horse as a good one," says Marianne Alexander. She adds that having an animal put down is the hardest decision a breeder makes.
