Real-Life Decision Making

You are a civil engineer working for a construction company. The company has just placed a bid on a sewage treatment plant contract for a town. The bid -- the amount of money you said you would charge to do the job -- was based on a contract drawing and information given to you by the architect employed by the town.

Your company's bid is accepted and you take the contract. Unfortunately, after a few days of surveying the property where the plant is to be located, you realize the job will be more complicated than the architect's information led you to believe. This job is definitely going to be more expensive than you had predicted.

You explain the situation to the architect, but he insists your contract is binding and you will have to honor the price you quoted or he will find another company.

The job is very important to your company, so you look for ways to design the plant that will allow it to be finished under budget. You find that by cutting a number of corners in the construction of the plant, it would be possible to meet your bid. The plant would be functional, but not up to your usual standards.

What do you do?
