Diver ... (Military - Enlisted)

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Decision Making

You are a navy diver using your skills as an underwater welder to make repairs to a ship. In order to do so, you are working in an underwater habitat, which is a special environment designed to keep the water away from your work area. A balloon-like object blows out all the water, creating a dry air pocket that makes it easier to weld.

"It's the same idea as if you hold a cup upside down and push it into a bathtub full of water," says Lieut. Andy Walsh. "There's no water inside the cup because you've created an air hole."

You are in the midst of your repairs when a strong current comes up. It quickly becomes clear that it is too dangerous for you to continue working. You begin swimming toward the surface. But as you come up, you become tangled in the rigging and are unable to surface.

If you keep struggling, you will just become more tangled. Yet you must get out of the water before the current gets any stronger or you run out of air. What do you do?
