Real-Life Math

"Mathematics are important to fishermen and I'll tell you why," says John Murray. He is a commercial fisher. "One of the things we use math for is to prepare our hang ratios for our nets."

Another instance when fishers use math is to estimate the amount of money they can expect from a catch. They need to know the price per pound of species of fish they have caught.

A crew has brought in 980 sockeye salmon. The crewmembers know that the average weight of a sockeye in this catch is 5.4 pounds. Sockeye are going at $2 per pound and each deckhand can expect 10 percent of the value of the catch.

What can each crewmember expect to be paid as their dollar share of this salmon catch?
