Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are a neonatal nurse assisting a couple with their newborn. They are concerned about their baby and have many questions. These are some of the answers you give them, in order to educate and comfort them.

1. Is it normal for my newborn not to be able to hold up its head? When will its neck muscles be strong enough?

Newborns cannot support their head because their neck muscles aren't developed. When they are three to four months old, they are able to support their head.

2. Can a newborn see in color?

A newborn infant is able to see in full color.

3. My baby keeps his fists clenched. Is this OK?

It is normal for a newborn to keep its hands clenched in a fist, with its arms outstretched.
