Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are calculating the number of days before Simon may be released from the hospital.

First, calculate how many grams he weighs now:

Grams = 1.7 kg x 1,000 grams per kg
Grams = 1,700

How many grams does he need to weigh?

Grams = 2.3 kg x 1,000 grams per kg
Grams = 2,300
2,300 grams - 1,700 grams = 600 grams

The baby must gain 600 grams before he can be released.

600 grams / 28.4 grams per day = 21.1 days

The baby must stay in the hospital for approximately 21 more days.
