Real-Life Decision Making

A man has an appointment to see you on a Friday afternoon. He sits down, takes off a sock and shows you a black bump on one of his big toes. Called a lesion, it is a raised bump that might or might not be painful.

The man says he just noticed it a day or two ago. He says it doesn't hurt.

You're not sure what it is. You fear it might be a malignant tumor, also called a melanoma. This would mean he had a cancerous growth on his toe.

You haven't seen many melanomas before, so you're not sure. If you wait a few days and see what happens, you might know better. If you have him see a specialist, it will mean your weekend will be delayed.

What do you do?
