Real-Life Math -- Solution

To find the percentage, divide the weight for each item by the total weight. The total weight is 1 ton, which equals 2,000 lbs.

For example:

Paper products equals 240 pounds.

240 / 2000 = 0.12

Convert the decimal to a percentage by multiplying by 100.

0.12 x 100 = 12 percent

Use the above equation for each item of trash. You should get the following percentages:

Paper products12 percent
Newspapers20 percent
Glass15 percent
Cardboard2 percent
Disposable diapers3 percent
Aluminum and cans8 percent
Plastic3 percent
Kitchen scraps30 percent
Misc. (cat litter, yard waste)7 percent

Total =100 percent
