Real-Life Math

You are an oncologist. You are treating a brother and sister who both have leukemia, a cancer in the blood system. You are going to use radiation therapy to try to beat the disease.

"In radiation oncology, math and physics are used on a daily basis to calculate doses of radiation therapy to be delivered," says Dr. Luci Chen. She is an oncologist.

"Doses of medicine need to be calculated carefully so that patients receive the dose that is appropriate to their height and weight," she adds.

You need to know Sondra's and Sebastian's exact height and weight in centimeters and kilograms.

However, on the charts their measurements are given in feet, inches and pounds. Figure out their height and weight in metric.

Remember:
2.2 pounds = 1 kilogram
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
1 foot = 12 inches
Sondra: 5'2" and 102 pounds
Sebastian: 5'5" and 140 pounds
