Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You recommend radiation therapy for the patient.

This is the real-life decision that Dr. Luci Chen would make. She is an oncologist.

"We recommend radiation therapy to a patient who has had a lumpectomy to decrease the chance of the tumor coming back in the breast," says Chen.

You present this decision to the board of doctors. You explain that radiation therapy will drastically reduce the chance of recurrence. The doctors agree.

"If we don't treat with radiation therapy, there is over a 40 percent chance that the tumor will grow back in a few years. After radiation therapy, the literature shows that fewer than seven to 10 percent will recur in the breast."
