Real-Life Math

Math skills might not play a huge role in a career as an interpreter or translator. But there are times when they might come in handy.

To illustrate, Katarzyna Gonnerman recalls an experience interpreting for a university math professor.

"This university professor was talking about linear theory," laughs Gonnerman. She admits her knowledge of math is somewhat limited.

"I interpreted what he was saying exactly, but I had no idea what he was talking about. I just kept nodding my head."

Basic math skills are useful in just about any career, especially if you are in business for yourself.

You are doing freelance work as an interpreter. Because you work for yourself, you are in charge of billing your clients.

In the past month, you've worked 38.5 hours.

If you're paid $285 per day for interpreting and a day is considered to be 6 hours, how much do you bill for interpreting?
