Real-Life Communication -- Solution
Sherri has always been slightly overweight, but recently her weight
has nosedived. In addition, she's taken a recent interest in thinness, and
is very proud of her "new" body. You aren't surprised she is so thin because
she never eats. But surprisingly, she's still able to exercise.
Sherri
has always been good at school, but now she seems to be obsessed with getting
top marks.
After making these observations, you are worried that Sherri
might be anorexic. By reading the passage about anorexia, you're able to summarize
this information. People with anorexia:
- Often exhibit severe weight loss
- Exercise excessively
- Often take pride in their extreme thinness
- Overachieve academically and have a preoccupation with getting perfect
grades
While you can't be sure that your friend has anorexia, she exhibits
enough symptoms to concern you. You urge her to make an appointment with her
doctor for further consultation.
"I do a lot research, so careful reading
and scientific writing are part of my job," says Dr. Michael Jenike. "If you
really want to understand an issue, you have to do thorough research."
