Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could write:

The science and art of health physics grew out of the discoveries of X-rays and radioactivity in the closing years of the 19th century. The X-ray was discovered by German physicist Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895. Roentgen's discovery was a scientific bombshell. Scientists and laymen received the news with extraordinary interest.

Newspapers and magazines of the day provided the public with numerous stories about the new rays. Some stories were true, others fanciful.

The public was fascinated by the invisible ray with the ability to pass through solid matter. It seemed incredible that the ray could provide a picture of the bones and interior of the body. Scientists' minds were captivated by the extraordinary new radiation. It had a shorter wavelength than light. That meant new and great advancements in physics.

Scientists and the public were enthusiastic about potential applications of the newly discovered rays as an aid in medicine and surgery. Early in 1886, several medical radiographs had been made in Europe and the U.S. which were used by surgeons to guide them in their work.
