The engine that you are working on has been taken apart, and the parts have to be put back. You have to line up 8 different parts so that they are in order from smallest to largest.

Joe Robertson is a small engine mechanic. "A lot of measurements in the engines themselves are fairly precise. For example, you need to know how to read numbers like 0.9985 inches and be able to tell which of the two numbers is smaller, 0.4974 or 0.4980," he says.

Here are some bolt pieces. Put them in order from smallest to largest.

  • 0.996
  • 0.499
  • 0.689
  • 0.393
  • 0.500
  • 0.900
  • 0.629
  • 0.438

Now you need to convert them into fractions to see which size socket wrench you should use. You will have to round them off to the nearest 10th.

"Knowing fractions is also important," says Robertson. "All of your wrenches and sockets are in fractions, such as 9/16. It's important to know how to convert fractions."

Convert the above socket sizes according to the smallest fraction possible. Round it to the nearest 10th.
