Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are an exploitation engineer sending an e-mail to an investor answering his basic questions about crude oil. These are your answers:

  1. What matter formed crude oil?

Crude oil comes from the remains of tiny aquatic plants and animals. It developed over millions of years.

  2. What did bacteria do?

Not all of the organic material completely decomposed. Bacteria broke down what was left into substances rich in hydrogen and carbon.

  3. What did increased pressure and heat from the weight of the layers do to the organic matter?

As the layers piled up, the pressure and heat on the hydrogen-rich substances increased. That transformed them, ever so slowly, into crude oil and natural gas.

"A good grasp of English is a good thing," says Jeanne Phene, an exploitation engineer. "Being able to write well is helpful, because there's a lot of e-mails flying around.

"Sometimes some of the young workers are a little too informal in their e-mails for project management," says Phene. "You don't write an e-mail while you're trying to communicate project information the same way you send an e-mail... to a friend saying, 'Let's go for coffee.' It's not the same. You need to be a little bit more formal and clear."
