Many students feel anxious about software. They're often not confident that they'll understand the material.

In these situations, the software trainer can't just sit everybody down and start teaching. They have to ensure that everyone is comfortable and that the atmosphere is friendly but businesslike.

It also means making sure you're well organized so the class begins smoothly. Sometimes, this isn't easy.

You're a software trainer. It's early on a Monday morning. Today you will be teaching five people how to use some accounting software. The students are coming to your classroom, which is about a 30-minute drive from where the students work. The classroom contains five computers for students, and one computer for you.

As the students begin to arrive, you receive a phone call from your students' workplace. Apparently, two students can't make it, but they will be replaced by two substitutes.

All the students arrive, including the two substitutes, and you begin the class. Just then, the two "canceled" students arrive. They know nothing about the cancellation and have booked off work and driven across town to attend your class. All five student computers are already occupied.
