Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You take the dog to the veterinarian and assist with the procedure.

Because part of your job as an animal health technologist is to assist in euthanasia, you decide to take Marmaduke to the veterinarian to be euthanized.

This is by far one of the most difficult decisions you've ever had to make in your job, helping to euthanize an animal that you know and love.

You choke down your own personal feelings and assist the veterinarian, and the procedure is over in minutes.

You feel horrible about it afterward, and it's a very difficult thing to get over. You question why you didn't try to find a home for the dog yourself, or why you didn't try to take the animal into your own home. But you can't adopt all unwanted animals.

This is a real-life decision frequently made by animal health technologists, says Lydia Beswick.

"Sometimes it's something that can be treated, but because of financial reasons people cannot afford to, and they put them down. That's hard to deal with."
