Real-Life Decision Making

As a transplant surgeon, your quick decisions can be the difference between life and death for a patient. There are many people on a waiting list for a new kidney, heart or lung.

Maude O'Grady has been in need of a new kidney for almost seven months. Actually, as of today, she's been on the waiting list for exactly six months.

"You know, I never thought I'd make it this far," she said to you over the telephone recently. "I'm over 70 now. Far as I can see, I'm on borrowed time. Thanks for helping me."

You get a phone call telling you there is a kidney available that is a match for Maude. That's great news! But you think of 11-year-old Duke Dudley, who also needs a kidney. Duke's condition is more serious than Maude's, but Maude's been on the waiting list four months longer.

What do you do?
