Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Communications options:

To communicate the potential dangers of a volcanic eruption, you could decide to:

  • Write a press release for the area newspapers, radio and television stations.
  • Develop an interactive Internet page outlining the safety instructions. Include a place for people to ask questions and receive answers.
  • Hold meetings with the area residents and other team members.
  • Post leaflets across the area.
  • Talk to the post office to see about the possibility of their distributing leaflets in an emergency situation.

Safety instructions:

A few years ago, after a number of deaths of volcanologists, the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) developed a set of safety rules. These guidelines are very basic in terms of safety. They were published in a 1994 issue of the Bulletin of Volcanology.

The rules cover these three areas: planning, operations and equipment.

This is how volcanologist Cathy Hickson summarizes the key points:

"Make sure people know that you're going into the crater or up on the mountain; that people know where you're going to be and how long you're going to be there; that you wear a hard hat and other safety equipment depending on where you're going.

"Always have somebody back at the base monitoring a potentially hazardous situation, and maintain radio contact with the person who's in the crater. It totally depends on the situation. Every volcano is different."
