Video Game Tester

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are a video game tester looking over the rulebook to make sure that it reads clearly. These are the answers you find to your questions:

1. What is the object of the game?

You're trying to get back to your home, your wife and your son.

2. Why has your homecoming been delayed?

Your homecoming has been delayed because you have angered the god Poseidon.

3. How many times can you be wounded?

You can be wounded twice during the game without being killed.

4. Which god is your protector?

Athena is your protector.

"When we used to do console development we did that (had testers review the instruction booklets)," says quality assurance manager Nathan Pinard. "[This is often done] if you have the booklets for a Wii game or an Xbox game. It depends on the company."

Pinard's company, Ludia, is now focused on mobile games. Rather than booklets there are electronic tutorials for the games. Game companies such as Ludia will often have testers review tutorials to make sure they're clear.

"The tutorials could be something that would be verified in that sense, to make sure that the players will be able to play and understand the game, for sure," says Pinard.
