Real-Life Decision Making

Imagine you're a biochemist working in a clinical laboratory. Your lab often does blood work for hospitals, doctors and insurance companies.

One day, the emergency room of a nearby hospital sends over blood samples from a man they suspect suffered a heart attack. Time is of the essence. Staff at the other hospital want to know if they should admit the man and start a battery of tests to determine if open-heart surgery is required, or if they should send him home with a bad case of indigestion.

Your tests are inconclusive, but suggest the man did not have a heart attack. But how accurate are those results?

Now you have a dilemma -- if you release these results, the man will be sent home. He could be out of the reach of medical professionals if he suffers another attack. On the other hand, do you want the man to be needlessly frightened and run through a battery of tests based on so little evidence? And new tests cost money.

What are you going to do?
