Real-Life Math -- Solution

You have to figure out if it's worthwhile for the association to spend its entire budget fighting the legislation.

First, figure the cost to each company for one year:

$2,500 per month x 12 months = $30,000 per company

Now the total for the association's membership:

$30,000 x 25 = $750,000

The cost to fight the legislation is $800,000. The cost to comply is $750,000. It would be less expensive for the association to allow this particular legislation to pass. They would even save $50,000.

Do you have to be a calculus whiz to be a political lobbyist? Legislative advocate Michael Ross says, "No."

However, aspiring political lobbyists do need to understand budgeting. "They have to know how to read budgets," says Ross. They have to know how to add, subtract, multiply [and] divide. They need to know numbers."
