You're helping a gymnast maximize his body potential in his new bar routine. He falls off the bar during one of the routines and you want to figure out how long it took him to fall:

t = the square root of [d / (0.5 x g)]

Substitute the numbers given into the formula:

t = the square root of [9 feet / (0.5 x 32.2 feet per second2]
t = the square root of [9 feet / 16.1 feet per second2]
t = the square root of [0.559 feet per second2]
t = 0.75 seconds

It only takes the gymnast 0.75 seconds to fall from the bar.

This calculation is complete, but your work isn't done yet. The position of the body, the clothing worn, the body surface area and other factors will alter the air resistance and affect the speed of the falling object.
