Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Your television forecast might sound like this:

"It's going to be a hot, sticky one out there with a temperature of 85 degrees. Make sure you take a hat with you to prevent sunstroke, and drink plenty of water. You'll need it because the humidity sits at 85 percent, and this means sweat city!

"The wind won't be much help to cool you off as it's only moving at 4.8 miles per hour from the east. You won't be having much luck kite-flying today. It might be a good day to jump in the pool instead!

"The visibility isn't good today, because the heat is making it really hazy. You might want to think twice about sailing or water-skiing. The farthest away you'll be able to see clearly is about seven miles."

Television is just one place where meteorologists need communications skills, says James R. Holton. He works in the atmospheric sciences department at the University of Washington.

"But all meteorologists must be able to communicate their research results in papers and technical reports, and verbally in conferences," he says. "Of course, such skills are important whether one is communicating results of original research or reporting weather observations and forecasts to the public."
