Real-Life Math
You are a cryonics technician employed in a facility in the southern
U.S. You help in the process of suspension, or freezing people, and maintaining
the bodies once they are in a state of suspended animation.
However,
the actual technical process of freezing and maintaining bodies takes up only
a small part of your time. You devote many hours to educating the public about
cryonics.
Tonight, you are in Canada giving a speech on cryonics. The
talk goes well, and people seem quite interested in the idea. Several come
up afterward to ask questions.
As the crowd begins to thin out, an
elderly man approaches you. He is interested in the idea of being frozen,
but worried about the amount of money involved.
It's been a long
day, but you sit down with him to work out the cost. In order to give him
a final total, you'll need to convert all your figures into Canadian
dollars.
You break the cost down into the initial charge for transportation
and freezing, and the annual cost for maintenance.
Transportation and Other Costs | $26,000 |
Laboratory Evaluations | $1,000 |
Temperature Control | $9,300 |
Record Keeping | $475 |
Annual Costs
Liquid Nitrogen and Storage | $2,000 |
Use an exchange rate of $1 in American
funds = $1.46 in Canadian funds.
