Real-Life Decision Making

The goal of every speech-language pathologist is to help her clients speak more clearly. Depending upon the severity of the problem, that can be a short-term goal or something more long term. Pathologists often also have to refer people to other professionals for other help as well.

You are a speech-language pathologist working with students in a school district. A new student comes to you on a Monday morning, saying she needs help learning to speak more clearly. Her fellow students, she says, have been making fun of her lisp.

Since she has never been diagnosed with a speech-language disorder, you tell her she will have to take some tests. She refuses. She only wants someone to help her stop pronouncing "S" words so poorly.

The school's policy is that all new students must be tested. You feel for the student and you know you could help her.

What do you do?
