Real-Life Math

You are in your workshop creating Zippy, a clay animation figure for a TV commercial. You already have the lighting, backdrop and the armature (the metal framework for the clay sculpture) ready to film.

"Clay animators use math to calculate the speed at which their characters will move," says John Lemmon, a clay animator in North Carolina. "You also need to know how long it is going to take you to create something."

Before you begin sculpting this sequence, you need to budget the amount of time it will take to complete.

  1. If it takes you, on average, 10 minutes to resculpt Zippy for each frame, how many hours will it take you to produce 125 frames?
  2. If one frame equals 0.5 seconds of running time on the film, how many minutes will it take for a film of 125 frames to play?
