Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You schedule more lifeguards because it is opening day.

This is probably the best decision to make, especially because it is opening day. Safety of the guests must always be taken into consideration, even though staffing costs need to be considered, says George Rohman. He is the operations manager for a water park.

Remember that the pool is larger than last year. That means there could very well be more kids in the pool. Even with the cooler weather, the opening of the water park officially kicks off summer. That means there will probably be a good crowd.

The best decision would be to start with three or four lifeguards, but schedule two of them for shorter shifts. One of the lifeguards may be able to work a longer shift if the pool is busy, which would be the ideal scenario.

Consider telling one of the lifeguards that he or she may not need to work the entire shift. When staff know ahead of time what the circumstances are, they then have the chance to decide who would like the shorter shift.
